🎯 The Challenge

The client's business friend, Greener Lawn Supplies, ran their entire delivery operation through a custom WordPress driver portal built around a Wholesale Delivery Tracker plugin. The developer who built it had gone silent, leaving no documentation and — as I suspected from the start — control over third-party accounts nobody on the client side could reach.

I was asked to make three specific changes to the driver portal without breaking a live, business-critical system. The constraints were real: no build notes, initial access credentials that didn't work, and a locked Google Drive. Any mistake would directly affect real deliveries during business hours.

Before quoting, I insisted on written permission from the business owner and a few hours to understand exactly how the portal and tracking data were wired — because inheriting a vanished developer's work usually means hidden dependencies.

💡 Our Solution

I proposed a phased, staging-first plan to keep risk and cost low. Phase 0–1 (safe staging clone, full backups, plus two quick wins) was fixed at $250; streamlining the tracking step to near a single tap (Option A) added $150 for $400 total. A fully hands-free driver app (Option C) was scoped separately at $1,800, capped at $2,500, and parked for the future.

Every change was proven on a staging copy before going live. I set Auto-Arrange Stops to run furthest-first (delivered as a toggle), surfaced customer checkout notes on each stop in the driver portal, and collapsed the tracking-link save into a single "Paste & Save Tracking Link" tap. When order assignment later failed, I read the codebase rather than trusting the obvious plugin-licence red herring, and traced the fault to a Google Maps API key on an expired-trial project controlled by the previous developer.

🏆 The Result

All three brief items shipped, tested, and live, and the client approved the $400 milestone — "I had a look, and looks good. Good job." The separate Google Maps fault was fixed once the account owner upgraded the correct project to active billing: "its working now, account had to be upgraded." Order assignment worked immediately, and the one-tap flow now auto-sends customers their live tracking link by email plus SMS/WhatsApp. The client confirmed he'd continue the relationship — "based off our past working history, i will do this for you."
