🎯 The Challenge

The property owners wanted to rent their three-level Holden Beach vacation home without relying on commission-heavy booking platforms — but also without the complexity of an online booking engine, since all reservations and payments happen by phone. The site had to sell the home visually, show live availability the owners could update themselves, and stay simple enough to require almost no maintenance.
There were practical constraints too. The hosting account (GoDaddy Managed WordPress) contained a second, unrelated website that could not be touched. Source photos arrived at 59MB each and needed heavy optimisation for mobile visitors. And mid-project, the first design direction was rejected outright — the dark green palette didn't match the coastal feel the owners wanted — requiring a fast, full visual revision.
Late in the build, two more issues surfaced under deadline pressure: the embedded Google Calendar appeared completely empty to public visitors despite being fully booked, and the contact form stopped delivering emails because the server had no SMTP configuration.

💡 Our Solution

I proposed WordPress over static HTML for one reason: future flexibility — online booking could be added later without a rebuild. I presented a written five-phase project plan and a six-page structure (Home, The Property, Gallery, The Area, Availability, Contact), then validated the design as static HTML mockups with walkthrough videos before building anything in the CMS. When the dark green palette was rejected, the revision cost one day instead of a week because nothing had been built yet — the new pastel coastal design was approved with "MUCH better!"
The availability system uses an embedded Google Calendar wrapped in responsive markup so it fits phones cleanly. When it displayed empty to the public, I diagnosed the cause as calendar sharing permissions (private calendars look fine to signed-in owners but blank to visitors), sent 30-second fix instructions plus a screen recording, and confirmed the fix with incognito testing. When SMTP blocked the contact form near launch, I recommended removing the form and surfacing phone/email prominently instead — matching how the owners actually take bookings. All images were compressed from 59MB originals, rental agreement and legal terms were linked as PDFs, the weekly rate sits in a plain editable text block, and launch included domain pointing, SSL verification, a static SVG QR code review, and Yoast + Site Kit guidance for Google indexing.

🏆 The Result

The site went live at the client's own domain within the project window on a $550 budget. The owners update availability themselves just by adding Google Calendar events — no site editing ever required. Mid-project feedback: "Hello. We are very pleased!" Final review: "Very pleased with the end result. A bit of a rough start with initial design but the end result was very good and client is pleased." The client ended the project asking about additional website work — the strongest signal of a relationship built on trust.
