🎯 The Challenge
Modern Engrave, a laser engraving business, had a domain, a WordPress theme, and product images uploaded to the media library — but the live site was only a coming-soon page. There was no working store, no navigation, and critically, no finished written content. The owner wanted a site "working and mapped out" and pointed to a reference website they wanted to closely match.
The main constraint was the missing copy. I couldn't wait on final text without stalling the whole project, so the build had to be structure-first: get the store, categories, and layout working, then let the owner add descriptions at their own pace. A second challenge was managing expectations around replicating an existing design, where small animation and layout differences are unavoidable.
💡 Our Solution
I proposed a two-phase approach. First, I replicated the reference site's structure and layout using Elementor and Divi. I built the entire site on a staging server before migrating it to modernengrave.com, keeping the live domain clean during development. Once the client confirmed the replica matched ("It's exactly like the website I sent you"), I moved to phase two.
I replaced placeholder images with the client's real laser engraving photos and built proper WooCommerce categories — coaster, drinkware, and multilayer wood products — mapping each product to the right section. I then worked through multiple revision rounds: removing inherited elements like a "shop by colour" button, 3M-tape element, orange banners, and several pop-ups; fixing the search and account buttons; linking the logo to the home page; and adjusting the mobile menu and element sizing across devices. When the client reported an "empty cart," I diagnosed it as a UX misunderstanding rather than a bug and explained it clearly. Later, I delivered a paid add-on creating separate editable category pages so the owner could manage descriptions themselves.

Modern Engrave launched a fully working WooCommerce store with organised categories, responsive layouts, and self-editable pages. The client left a 5-star review: "Exceptional web development and design skills transformed a vision into a stunning online presence.
