🎯 The Challenge
Chris, a repeat client running Simply Doors and Windows in Australia, needed his live website moved from his existing host to a new Australian hosting provider. The critical constraint: the live site at simplydoorsandwindows.com.au had to remain completely untouched during the entire process. The new copy needed to run independently on a second domain, simplydoorsandwindows.au, so Chris could personally test everything before deciding to shut down the old host.
The project hit three real-world obstacles. The new hosting credentials didn't work on first attempt and needed a reset. The SSL certificate for the staging domain took hours to activate, blocking secure testing. Most significantly, after the initial transfer, the new .au domain kept redirecting visitors back to the old .com.au address — because WordPress stores its site URL in the database — which defeated the entire purpose of a separate staging environment and locked Chris out of the WordPress admin.
💡 Our Solution
The migration ran entirely through cPanel on both hosts: full file copy, database export and import onto the new Sydney-based hosting account. I verified all credentials on day one and flagged the broken login immediately, which Chris resolved within thirty minutes. I deliberately paused the transfer until the SSL certificate was confirmed active, so the site would be tested over HTTPS exactly as visitors would experience it.
To fix the redirect loop, I updated the WordPress site and home URLs in the database and cleaned internal references so the .au installation ran as a fully independent site — no longer bouncing traffic to the live domain. I then tested the frontend, admin login, and internal navigation myself before handing it over. I also took time to explain the hosting storage breakdown (13 GB account total vs. 5 GB of site files) covering databases, backups, cache, emails, and logs, so Chris fully understood his new account.
🏆 The Result
Delivered in four days. The complete website ran live and fully tested at simplydoorsandwindows.au while the original .com.au site continued operating with zero downtime and zero changes. Admin logins carried over unchanged. Chris confirmed: "Thank you, this looks good" and, after the storage explanation, "Ok, that makes sense." The old host stays live until Chris signs off — the final cutover decision remains with the business owner. Second successful project with this repeat client.
